Born in Embu County, Madam Rosemary Chelang’a never imagined her life’s journey would eventually take her far beyond her childhood home, into a region where she would become one of the most respected and transformative teachers of her time.

The seventh-born in her family, Rosemary began her academic path at D.E.B Kavufiri Nursery in 1972. She joined Standard One the following year and quickly distinguished herself as a top performer, often outshining everyone in her class. Her brilliance saw her progress through primary school without repeating any class, eventually sitting her CPE in 1979, where she passed with flying colours.

Her academic excellence earned her a place at Kaaga High School in Meru, where she studied from 1980 to 1983. Determined and focused, she later joined St. Mark’s TTC Kigari in Embu (1985-1987), graduating with impressive results in the Primary Teacher Education (PTE) examinations.

Rosemary’s life took a defining turn when the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) posted her to West Pokot County, a region then considered challenging and unfamiliar for many. But like a soldier on a mission, she embraced the assignment with courage, embarking on a two-day journey to a place where she had no relatives or connections.

Despite the uncertainty, Rosemary relied on the assurance from the TSC Office that she would enjoy her place of work in the county, and this energized her to settle down and familiarize with the new place faster.

During weekends, she would queue at the only telephone booth at the Makutano Post Office to speak with her family back in Embu, keeping her rooted and motivated.

Her first posting was at Kapkoris Primary School, where she taught Social Studies among other subjects. Her learners consistently posted outstanding KCPE results, a testament to her passion and discipline. Despite walking approximately 6 km daily as there was no means of transport those days, she delivered quality education with commitment and joy.

Impressed by her work, TSC transferred her to Tilak Comprehensive School, where she continued raising academic standards and shaping the values of countless learners.

Her influence extends beyond academics. Madam Rosemary has been a pillar in Guidance and Counselling, Scouting, and Environmental Clubs, playing an instrumental role in moulding disciplined, confident, and responsible citizens.

Madam Rosemary’s career was marked by continuous professional growth. In 2008, she undertook an upgrading course at Kaimosi TTC, followed by other advanced trainings that shaped her into a versatile educator and leader. Over the years, she received numerous awards, trophies, and recognitions for her exemplary service.

Her personal life also reflects resilience and strength. She was married to the late Joseph Chelang’a whom together were blessed with successful children. Her husband, whose leadership legacy she helped shape, was the former MCA of Kapenguria Ward. Mentored by her spouse and the late Ismael Chelang’a, the then Rift Valley Provincial Commissioner, she gained deep knowledge in community service and local leadership.

Through teaching, marriage, assimilation, and socialization, Madam Rosemary fully embraced Pokot culture, becoming not just a teacher but a community mother, mentor, and bridge between cultures.

Today, as she prepares for retirement, Madam Rosemary Chelang’a stands tall as a testament to what dedication, compassion, and excellence can achieve. She leaves behind a legacy of transformed lives, stronger communities, and a future forever influenced by her work.

Long live Madam Rosemary Chelang’a, the Head of Institution Lokna Comprehensive School.
