Learning materials worth Ksh21M dispatched to ECDEs in Kisumu

Governor Anyang' Nyong'o flags off supplies to ECDE centres in the county.

The County Government of Kisumu has dispatched learning materials worth Ksh21 million to over 681 Early Childhood and Education Centres (ECDEs).

Flagging off the equipment outside his office, Governor Anyang Nyong’o said the items are for this financial year that is coming to an end.

He said they have been giving out such items worth Ksh25 million every year since 2015, including textbooks, pencils, marker pens, exercise books, and sharpeners.

Governor Nyong’o said the county has some 44,251 learners to its credit; 22,081 girls and 22,440 boys, revealing that 624 ECDE centres are domiciled in primary schools while 57 are standalone facilities.

Flanked by his deputy Dr Mathew Owili and the executive in charge of education John Awiti, Nyong’o said the key pillars of ECDE include nutrition, good health, safety and protection, and responsive caregiving.

The governor said the provision of such equipment ensures learners are accorded quality education at the end of the day, committing to strengthen ECDE to build a strong foundation for learners to tackle modern day challenges.

Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o waves to the crowd before flagging off provisions for ECDE centres in the county.

He asked those charged with the distribution to exercise high levels of integrity and ensure they reach all the earmarked institutions.

Quality ECDE, he said, is key in the realization of sustainable development goals, calling for prudent expenditure of resources allocated to the sector to achieve those goals.

“True meaning of early childhood education is total child development, in a learning environment that is joyful, child-centered, playful and activity-based. It is expected to provide necessary maturational and experimental readiness to the child for meeting the demands of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC),” he said, adding that his government will scale up investments in the sector to allow all children to access free, equitable, inclusive and quality ECDE.
