Learning crippled as Maasai Mara University staff threaten to strike

Learning at Maasai Mara University will come to a halt next week if the institution fails to honour a Court decision to implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with its staff union.

In a press conference at the university in Narok, officials of the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU) Narok branch threatened to lead the 600 workers to the streets next week to also protest over the delayed appointment of a new Council by the Ministry of Education and high taxation by the government.

Earlier in a memo signed by KUSU Maasai Mara officials, they accused the university of suspending implementation of the CBA 2017/2021 two years ago forcing the union to move to Court.

The Branch Secretary claimed that the institution’s administration had spent over Ksh30 million defending the case despite the union demanding Ksh62 million.

“We, therefore, call on the Ministry of Education, Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC), Director of public prosecution to carry out a forensic audit on the university accounts regarding illegal transfer of funds into individual accounts, lawyer accounts and contractors,” the memo read in part.

The union also wants the leadership of the institution to be reviewed as since 2019 they have had leadership challenges following the ‘Mara Heist’ where incompetence and unreliable leadership reportedly ran down the university.
