Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula and Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda have called for the drafting of a Bill that will compel the national and county governments to distribute sanitary towels to girls in primary and secondary schools.
They said there was a need for a budget line for provision of the sanitary pads to female students.
They pointed out that only an Act of Parliament had a long-lasting solution for the towels which, they said, had become a necessity for the young girls.
“Many of our young schoolgirls are suffering in silence because they lack sanitary towels.
Some are forced to skip classes whenever they are in their menses,” Savula said.
“We, thus, need legislation that will compel the two levels of government to distribute the pads to schools just the same they do with books,” he added.
Mrs. Muhanda said she had been using some cash from her allocation under the National Government Affirmative Action Fund but they could not reach every girl due to the prevailing high demand.
“I will consult and come up with a Bill that we shall table in Parliament to compel the national and county governments to source and distribute the towels in schools,” she added.
The duo was speaking at Navakholo Secondary School this afternoon when they donated sanitary towels to female students at the institution.
