Lawyers call for CBC abolishment over unclear implementation strategy

Lawyers from Kisii County have called for the abolishment of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) saying that it lacked a clear strategy for its implementation.

Led by Samson Sagwe, the lawyers further said that the education system was started and implemented hurriedly without consulting teachers who are the major cogs in its implementation.

“Teachers who are the main implementers of any curriculum were not involved from the beginning but were only ordered to teach and implement it,” claimed Sagwe.

He asked the just inaugurated CBC review team – dubbed the Working Party on Education Reforms – to shelve it for a while and allow the country to revert to the 8-4-4 system in the meantime.

“Although the system is good it needs gradual improvement to reach its goal,” he said.

Sagwe further argued that the curriculum’s assignments strained and drained pupils and it also robbed them of independence as it forced parents to do home work for them.

“Some parents even engage cyber cafe owners to do assignments for their children in exchange for pay,” he observed.
