Landlords around Kisii University have been urged to scrutinize and monitor students after it emerged that some of them were allegedly drug peddlers.

Addressing them at Nyamage location near the varsity, area Chief Sara Isaboke said that it was wise to invest in the rental houses to boost their economy but regretted that it was turning into a breeding ground for vices.

Saying that the welfare of society depends on collective responsibility, she appealed to churches and community policing groups to report suspects selling drugs students.

Kisii University Chaplain Father Lawrence Nyaanga praised the chief for her stand in fighting drug abuse.

He said that the University enrolls students from various parts of the world thus encouraged the need for close monitoring.

Fr. Nyaanga appealed to the students to shun drug abuse because it impairs the health of all sectors of their lives.

Asked to comment on drug abuse by students, the varsity Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. John Akama purported they could not monitor every detail of every student’s life.

“Every market has its own mad man. The University also has some odd students but we do not tolerate them,” he added.

He asked the students to live an exemplary life during and after their pursuit for education because society has invested in them as future leaders.

Prof. Akama asked the students to join community development groups in their villages during the December vacation.

“Let the students join and reinforce their communities with skills they have acquired from the University instead of indulging in evil activities,” he advised.

He asked parents to take advantage of the university to enroll their children to acquire professional skills.
