Lamu Governor commits to boost education standards

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy interacts with beneficiaries of bursaries recently.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has pledged to improve education standards by ensuring timely disbursement of scholarships and bursaries, employment of ECDE teachers, and development of ECDE infrastructure.

Speaking at an education stakeholders’ forum at Lamu Polytechnic, he said that to realize the development the county would collaborate with key stakeholders.

Timamy reiterated his commitment to improving the standards of education saying the provision of quality education was a basic right.

The Governor decried the low transition rate from secondary school to university noting that if drastic measures are not taken the downturn would continue.

“Out of 2,040 students who sat for KCSE in 2023, 400 were under the county scholarship programme but only 192 managed to attain university grades,” he said.

Timamy also highlighted negligence by parents, inadequate laboratories, ICT labs and proper boarding facilities in boarding schools, and lack of teacher motivation among the factors that pose a risk to a slump of the education sector.

His Deputy, Raphael Munyua, noted that absenteeism was also a major threat to their success and emphasized on parents fulfilling their parenting obligation.

Among other issues that were discussed included addressing the shortage of sciences and languages teachers, motivating teachers through incentives, and organizing workshops and training.

In attendance was CS Amb. Ali Abbas, CECMs led by Education CECM Sebastian Owanga, Chief Officer Hafswa Difini, MCAs, County Director of Education Mr. Mutwiri, County TSC Director Riziki, Religious leaders, PTA & BoM representatives among others.
