Kwale vocational center receives 60 computers to boost digital literacy

Kwale Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo receives laptops at Ukunda Vocational Centre on Tuesday.

Stanbic Bank and American Towers Corporation (ATC) Kenya have donated 60 computers to Kwale Vocational Training Center (VTC) in a significant move aimed at enhancing digital literacy and vocational training in the region.

Through the programme, selected tutors will undergo a two-week training programme on digital skills for trainers at the Center.

The training is designed to enhance their ability to effectively teach digital literacy and technical skills to students, ensuring that they are well-equipped to make the most of the computers and integrate technology into their training programmes.

Stanbic Bank Regional Manager Samson Ng’eno said the donation aligns with the bank’s vision to empower youth and communities by providing essential tools and resources that foster skill development and economic opportunities.

Ng’eno said the foundation’s mission is to boost digital capabilities from the grassroots level, ultimately contributing to the reduction of unemployment rates across Kenya.

“Our aim is to empower the society from the grass roots level so that the youth can have a platform to showcase their skills and create their own employment in the digital space,” said Ng’eno.

He emphasized that equipping vocational centers with modern technology is crucial for preparing students for the digital economy, enhancing their employability and encouraging entrepreneurship.

Ng’eno said the computers will enable students to gain valuable IT skills, access online resources, and participate in digital learning programmes, which are essential in today’s job market.

He said the initiative also supports the broader goal of bridging the digital divide and promoting inclusive growth in underserved areas.

Jacqueline Chomba, a representative from ATC Kenya Digital Communities, said the partnership will significantly impact local learning centers.

She said by providing state-of-the-art technology and reliable internet access, ATC Kenya aims to create a more effective and engaging educational environment.

“This programme will not only modernize the learning experience but also open up opportunities for youth to delve into the digital economy,” said Chomba.

She said with the resources, students will be better prepared to navigate and succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Chomba said the long-term goal is to foster a generation of digital-savvy individuals who are well-equipped to meet the demands of the modern job market.

Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo emphasized the transformative role of digitalization in creating employment opportunities for young people.

He urged the administrators of vocational centers to adopt innovative approaches to education.

“We must expand our thinking beyond traditional classroom settings to ensure that even those who cannot access these centers benefit from digital knowledge, we need to be creative and forward-thinking,” he said.

Kombo said that by fostering innovation the county can better support and empower the youth.
