A section of Kaya elders in Kwale County has called on the Ministry of Education (MoE) to include cultural studies and traditions in the new curriculum.

The group, led by Hamisi Juma Mwajao said it crucial for the Ministry to incorporate culture elements into the education system from the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) level all the way to university.

A Kaya elder Hamisi Mwajao speaks in an interview at Kaya Tiwi beach in Matuga.

Mwajao said teaching children about their cultural heritage will help them better understand their origins, appreciate their identity, and foster a sense of pride in their cultural roots.

According to Mwajao, the inclusion of cultural studies will play a vital role in enhancing cultural diversity, promoting peace, and ensuring long-term prosperity.

“Integrating cultural studies into the education system is essential for preserving Kenya’s rich heritage while promoting unity and social harmony,” he said.

He said that when children are taught to appreciate and respect the traditions and customs of different communities, it can lead to greater harmony and understanding between people from diverse backgrounds.

Mwajao said the move will contribute to national unity and cohesion, which is critical for the country’s social and economic development.

The Kaya elder also expressed concern over the diminishing importance of cultural heritage in modern society, especially among the youth.

Mwajao said that many traditional practices and values are gradually being lost as younger generations adopt globalized lifestyles.

He said the shift has resulted in a decline in the values that traditionally promoted community cohesion and moral uprightness.

Mwajao further said cultural practices promote virtues such as respect for elders, communal responsibility, and the importance of family.

He said the MoE should consider the recommendations seriously and work towards ensuring that cultural studies become an integral part of the curriculum.
