SNE teachers want matter of stagnation in one job group addressed

KUSNET Secretary General James Torome speaking in Vihiga. While appreciating TSC for deploying 6,000 teachers recently, he asked for a fresh negotiation that will also see the promotion of some members who have stagnated since 2018.

The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) has decried the stagnation of some of its members in certain job groups.

Its Secretary General James Torome said proposals for career progression have not been implemented since 2018, calling for an urgent meeting between the members and the employer in order to iron out contentious issues affecting them.

Speaking in Vihiga County, Torome said what they had agreed before was gathering dust, nonetheless lauding the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for engaging some 6,000 teachers whom he said have so far been deployed to various schools.

It was also revealed that some of those handling regular schools were promoted to very high grades.

He similarly appreciated the introduction of allowances for members who are using walking aids, revealing that those using one crutch will be entitled to an allowance of 20,000/- per month, an amount that teachers using walking frames will also earn.

“Those who engage both hands while walking and those using frames will also be placed in the same category,” he said.

Torome said the allowances will be backdated to March this year, advising a strict observance of the requisite requirements for them to be considered for guidance allowances.

He said they will also be exempted from paying taxes.
