The Kenya Nation Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) has renewed its threat to boycott marking of this year’s KCSE examinations, this time going down to the amount paid for each script marked.

The teachers said the cost of living has shot through the roof, demanding that the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) must adjust the payment to enable them cope with the current financial hardships.

Addressing Kisii branch teachers during their Annual General Meeting (AGM), the union’s national Vice Chairman Moses Mukumu blamed the council for delayed payments.

He asked members not to be divided this time round as was the case last year when they gave the council an easy time to convince them to continue marking despite contentions.

“Those who were hosted at Alliance High School betrayed our cause,” he complained, thanking those from the branch for their unwavering support for the union.

He at the same time applauded the region for the splendid performance in last year’s exam.

“Secondary schools in this region did well in last year’s KCSE. I ask teachers to use the same tricks to enable our children to succeed and join careers of their dream,” he said.

County Executive Secretary Joseph Abincha appealed to teachers to uphold their professional ethics, vowing that his office will not defend any wayward behavior.

“So far we have not had any serious problem and I hope they will continue being peaceful and we end the year well,” he remarked.

He asked the government to employ more teachers on permanent and pensionable terms instead of keeping them in tormenting internships, further advising those posted to junior secondary to register with the union for fair representation.
