KUPPET wants the issues it has raised to be addressed before Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers resume work when schools reopen, ranging from teachers’ welfare to the improvement of infrastructure.
Narok KUPPET Executive Secretary Charles Ng’eno, addressing the press in Narok town, warned that the union could call an industrial action should the government fail to take action.
“As a union, we have raised issues which we want addressed by the government before schools reopen. The issues include timely release of funds and confirmation of JSS teachers into permanent and pensionable terms,” he said.
He said it was illegal for (JSS) teachers to serve as interns for two years.
According to him, the teachers face numerous hardships, which include poor remuneration and long distances to work stations.
Ng’eno decried understaffing of schools and mismatch of subjects, saying that the government should use the Ministry of Education (MoE) and The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) directors to identify the challenges facing schools in the country.
“Our schools, not only here in Narok but across the country, grapple with understaffing. This remains a matter of concern to us. JSS teachers have been forced to take subjects they did not train in university. This is wrong and we want this matter addressed urgently,” added Ng’eno.
