Nakuru County Executive Secretary of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (KUPPET), Duncan Macharia, has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to issue official letters to over 25,000 recently promoted teachers to enable them to continue diligently performing their duties.

Macharia said that according to Kenya’s Constitution, the Teachers Service Commission is independent. If it has promoted over 25,000 teachers, their employer, TSC, should give them official letters of promotion.

“We encouraged TSC to give over 25,000 teachers who were recently promoted their official letter to enable them to perform their duties professionally”, said the unionist.

Through the Parliamentary Committee on Education, he called on the Members of Parliament to stop delaying the issuance of official letters to over 25,000 promoted teachers. Instead, they should lobby and advocate for more budget from the National Treasury to be allocated to the TSC to encourage more teachers.

“We request our MPS to advocate for more funds from the National Treasury to promote over 178,000 teachers in Kenya who have stagnated in the same job group for many years. Teachers, like any other civil servant in Kenya, deserve promotion to enable them to perform their duties well,” said Macharia.

Macharia said that for many years, teachers have been suffering despite the considerable work they are doing in all schools in the country, and the time has come to promote them and improve their working conditions.

The Nakuru County KUPPET Executive Secretary also urged the TSC to ensure that it promotes Kenyan teachers in 47 Counties based on a pro-rata system according to the number of teachers in each county, ensuring that the Promotion process is fair and transparent to all teachers who apply for promotion.

He revealed that TSC discriminated against and marginalised Nakuru County in the last two Promotion processes conducted by TSC.

Macharia said many teachers in Nakuru County have stagnated in the same job group for many years. Due to the process used by TSC to promote teachers, Nakuru teachers have not received their fair share of promotions.

“The Nakuru County KUPPET is requesting the TSC to use the prorata system during the promotion exercise so that Nakuru County, which has many teachers in all of its 11 sub-counties, can get its fair share during promotion,” said Macharia.
