KUPPET urges TSC to absorb interns in permanent terms

KUPPET Executive Secretary for Migori Branch, Samuel Orwa Jasolo. He has asked the government to confirm intern teachers as permanent and pensionable.

Migori KUPPET Executive Secretary Samuel Orwa Jasolo has urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to absorb intern teachers in permanent and pensionable terms to sustain the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

He said the majority of interns in Migori face expiring terms this December because internship, as per the law, is a non-renewable one-year engagement.

Observing that in a group of 650 teachers in the county, only 215 are permanent. This has caused concerns over the successful implementation of CBC in approximately 280 schools.

Jasolo emphasized the need for immediate confirmation of the interns, especially those yet to undergo training as Grade 8 beckons.

“Failure to address this issue could jeopardize the CBC system, a cornerstone of the government’s educational strategy,” Jasolo said, issuing a stern warning that if they are not confirmed by January 2024, the union is prepared to initiate industrial action.

Away from employment, Jasolo expressed his deep frustration with the domiciling of Junior Secondary School (JSS) in primary schools.

Flanked by teachers who shared their grievances, with one lamenting the strain of teaching multiple subjects, they said they are forced to teach subjects they know little about.

They urged the government to relocate JSS to secondary institutions for adequate facilitation, including being exposed to laboratories.

The pleas underscored the inadequate manpower to support JSS in primary schools, emphasizing the impact of teacher frustration on effective education delivery.

The teachers stressed the urgency of addressing these challenges to ensure a seamless and lawful continuation of the CBC system.
