As schools continue to re-open for the 3rd term academic calendar this year, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Meru County branch Secretary Mr. Karuti Nchebere has urged the Ministry of Education to urgently release capitation funds to schools to enable smooth learning.

Speaking in his KUPPET office in Meru, Mr. Karuti said Principals and Headteachers are running schools without money as most of the parents are unable to pay fees due to the hard economic times being experienced currently.

The unionist said in term one the government released 19% and term two 18% so this third term they expect the government to release more than 60%.

“The government through the Ministry of Education just released a capitation of only 19% in the first term, then in term two it released 18%. We expect the government to release more than 60% in this third term”. Mr. Karuti noted.

Karuti said this term is a very busy term as it is in which teachers prepare candidates for national examinations hence the need for the funds to ensure smooth learning in schools.

He also urged parents to make some effort to pay school fees as prices of foodstuffs and other items used in schools have gone up.

“Remember prices of the items used in our schools like foodstuffs have skyrocketed and it’s becoming a nightmare to run a school “. Mr. Karuti lamented.
