Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) top leadership have faced tough times as they come in contact with angry teachers in the union’s ongoing branch Annual General Meetings.
It is said that the teachers are angry because their union top leaders have of the recent past neglected them and failed to protect them from the increasing deductions, with the recent deduction of National Social Security Fund (NSSF) having annoyed the teachers coupled with increasing taxes, a situation that made them to ask their leaders tough questions in those fora.
The teachers have now decided to take their union leadership to task over a number of policy issues that have come into effect in the last few years.
Last week, a KUPPET meeting at Monac Hotel in Kisii where the Deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima had attended brought to light the disappointment that teachers have in their union leadership.
It is said that one after the other, they stepped forward to demand explanations on the housing levy, the NSSF deductions and the overall punitive taxes that have made life unbearable.
Similar was witnessed in Bungoma where KUPPET National Gender Secretary and Bungoma Women representative Catherine Wambilianga graced the event.
In Vihiga, the situation was not any different when Branch Executive Secretary Sabala Inyeni took to the floor to address teachers at the Annual General Meeting held in Kaimosi Friends University.
“Let us allow our National officials to address the issues you have raised in this meeting. Let’s remain calm and listen to them”, Sabala pleaded with the teachers who were visibly agitated.
It’s believed that several members had earlier demanded that the National chairman who is also Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba who had graced the branch AGM apologize to teachers for betraying them in Parliament.
“Hon. Omboko Milemba, you must tell us whether you are for us or against us. You can’t continue serving us as our National chairman even after betraying us in the voting session during the finance bill 2023. It is clear where your loyalty is”, one teacher was quoted saying.
In Homabay branch which held its Branch Annual General Meeting today, no KUPPET National official was present to Grace the occasion.
It’s said that the Teachers were anxiously waiting to put the national office to task during the plenary session.
In July this year, Milemba was forced to cut short his speech while he was attending to a sport event in Homabay when iritated Teachers demanded that he leaves.
