The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has unveiled its new nomination fee structure ahead of the 2026 national and branch elections, with top national positions such as Secretary General, National Chairman, and National Treasurer each attracting a fee of KSh 500,000.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has released its proposed nomination fee structure ahead of its national and branch elections slated for next year.

According to the schedule seen by Education News, candidates seeking the top national positions of Secretary General, National Chairman, and National Treasurer will each pay KSh 500,000 in nomination fees.

Other national posts, such as Deputy Secretary General, National Vice Chairman, National Organising Secretary, National Gender Secretary, National Secretary for Secondary and Tertiary, and several assistant secretarial positions, will each attract a fee of KSh 300,000.

At the branch level, aspirants for Executive Secretary will pay KSh 200,000. At the same time, Branch Chairpersons and Treasurers will part with KSh 100,000 each.

Other positions, including Vice Chairpersons, Organising Secretaries, and Gender Secretaries, have been set at KSh 50,000.

A section of KUPPET members has taken to social media to question whether such a financial barrier aligns with the union’s vision of inclusivity and equality.

Some officials have called for a review to ensure that teachers at the grassroots are not locked out of polls.

The polls, expected to take place in the second quarter of 2026, will be closely watched for transparency, fairness, and inclusivity.

If the fee structure remains unchanged, the upcoming KUPPET polls may become a test of the balance between financial sustainability and democratic accessibility within the union movement.
