KUPPET National Chairman Omboko Milemba has expressed concerns regarding budget cuts as a result of the rejection of the Finance Bill 2024, saying it will bring problems.

Milemba criticized the proposed delay of the second phase of the 2021-2025 CBA agreement, pointing out that the agreement had already been signed by the respective parties.

He said this during the recent farewell for the mother of the union’s National Assistant Treasurer Ronald Tunoi in Bomet Central Constituency, Bomet County.

He stated that the union had held meetings with the National Assembly’s Education Committee, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Treasury to discuss various issues affecting teachers.

The second phase of the CBA was initially allocated Ksh13.3 billion, which represented only 10 per cent. He urged that this matter be addressed promptly and called for the payment of the CBA.

He also addressed the recruitment of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, demanding that all 46,000 interns should be hired.

“We fought very hard to make sure that interns are in the budget,” he said.

He also discussed the proposal to eliminate medical coverage for teachers, particularly the Group Life Cover.

“These teachers will not have the health to teach our children,” said Milemba. “And therefore again as a minimum, beyond which the teachers cannot go, both the medical cover and the Group Life Cover be enhanced and maintained.”

He expressed sympathy for the government, acknowledging the various challenges it has been facing recently, and thanked teachers for staying calm and not participating in the recent protests.

“We understand that the government has challenges. I appreciate these teachers because they have remained very calm,” said Milemba.
