The Kenya Union of Post-primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has demanded for the prompt confirmation of Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns by January 2024.

Speaking during the union’s annual general meeting in Tala, the union’s secretary-general in Machakos Musembi Katuku emphasized the unfairness of compelling teachers to endure another year of uncertainty before securing confirmation.

He underscored the crucial link between confirming interns as permanent and pensionable and the success of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), stating that the government’s commitment to the curriculum’s prosperity hinges on meeting this demand.

Katuku highlighted the grievances of JSS teachers, who expressed discontent over being compelled to instruct primary school students from grade one to six, a task incongruent with their training.

Additionally, he voiced concerns about the budgetary allocations for education in Kenya compared to other African nations.

He emphasized the inadequacy of current capitation levels, citing the challenge it poses for schools to function adequately amid soaring commodity prices.

In a lament about logistical challenges, Katuku described the difficulties faced by school heads in transporting exam papers during heavy rains.

He called on the government to implement measures ensuring the smooth and secure transportation of examination materials.
