The TAO Teachers’ Welfare Association, Turkana County Chapter, has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the Turkana County Union of School Administrators (TACUSA) for allegedly interfering in the operations of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
In a press release ,TAO Patron Omasete B. Jonah accused TACUSA of engaging in activities that threaten the unity and professionalism of teachers in Turkana County.
The association said it was deeply concerned by reports that TACUSA had been involving itself in KUPPET affairs, introducing tribal and ethnic undertones into what should remain strictly professional matters.
“It has come to our attention, with deep concern, that TACUSA has increasingly involved itself in matters relating to KUPPET in Turkana County, drawing unnecessary tribal and ethnic undertones into purely professional affairs. This conduct is not only unwarranted but also retrogressive and divisive,” the letter stated.

TAO underscored that KUPPET is a national trade union representing teachers across the country, bound by principles of professionalism, equality, and unity.
The statement emphasized that all teachers, regardless of their community or county of origin, enjoy equal rights and privileges under the union’s constitution.
Any attempts to tribalize or politicize union leadership and activities, TAO warned, would not be tolerated.
The association further challenged TACUSA and its affiliates that if they are genuinely uncomfortable with the presence of non-local teachers in Turkana County, they are free to facilitate their unconditional transfer to their home counties.

However, TAO made it clear that any form of intimidation, discrimination, or harassment directed at non-local teachers would be unacceptable and met with firm opposition.
“We therefore demand that TACUSA immediately cease its interference in union affairs and desist from peddling tribal rhetoric among professionals,” Omasete stated.
He reaffirmed that teachers in Turkana County will continue to serve with dignity, unity, and mutual respect, regardless of ethnic or regional backgrounds.
The statement reflects growing tensions within the education sector in Turkana, with teacher welfare groups urging professionalism and tolerance to safeguard the integrity of teaching unions in the region.
