Bungoma County Woman MP Catherine Wambilianga who doubles as the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) National Gender Secretary has called on young teachers to start saving for their future.

Speaking at Maturu Vocational Training College in Kakamega on Saturday during the union Annual General Meeting (AGM), Wambilianga said that some teachers ended up living miserable lives after failing to save while on active duty.

“We have seen cases where a teacher never saved while earning. I don’t want to see teachers suffering after retirement. Let us save so that when we retire we start enjoying our savings,” she added.

She added: “We have many Saccos in our counties where we can save money for our families and ourselves for the future. Let us get registered with them,” she said.

The MP congratulated Ezekiel Machogu for his nomination as Ministry of Education Cabinet Secretary and expressed hope that he will bring changes in the sector and fight for teachers’ welfare.

“I have no doubt in the current government. With President William Ruto, teachers’ welfare will be catered for. He is a man who keeps his word,” she said.

Wambilianga further called on teachers to join the Burial Benevolent Fund (BBF) kitty for support during hard times.

“I have been on the forefront in Bungoma asking teachers to join the BBF, I therefore ask the same of you, Kakamega teachers,” she said, adding that the BBF leadership should be headed by teachers themselves because they understand each other.

However, speaking on the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) Programme, she called on the government to set aside a budget to facilitate the extra training.

“If there will be extra training that teachers ought to attend, I will work with my brother Omboko Milemba to push the government to set aside a budget for it,” she said.
