KUPPET NDC ends abruptly as delegates fight over constitution

Mukumu Girls
Akelo Misori, KUPPET Secretary General. Union NDC ended prematurely due to violence by delegates who demanded an halt to proposed changes to elective rules.

KUPPET NDC (National Delegates Conference) came to an abrupt end as delegates engaged in a physical fight demanding a halt to proposed amendments to the constitution.

Videos from the conference went viral, capturing physical altercations and chants of “we cannot allow.”

With the uproar unable to be quelled, the discussion on the amendments was postponed to a Special Delegates Meeting (SDC) yet to be scheduled.

The proposed amendments aimed to increase the nomination fee for candidates running for union other elective positions from Ksh10,000 to Ksh50,000, and Ksh100,000 for Treasurer Ksh200,000 for Chair.

It also suggested that in order to vie for Executive Secretary, one must either be currently serving or have previously served as a branch Executive Committee Member.

Additionally, the proposals aimed to increase the number of National Executive Board members and introduce JSS slots at both the branch and national levels.

Another proposal was to establish KUPPET regional offices.

The union’s Secretary General Akelo Misori and other officials were accused of attempting to manipulate the constitution to serve their own interests.

During a recent television interview, Akelo stated that KUPPET is exploring peaceful means to address concerns with the government without disrupting learning in schools.

The idea to establish the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers – KUPPET, was conceived in 1985 when undergraduate education students at Kenyatta University advocated for better terms and conditions of service for graduate teachers entering the teaching profession.
