KUPPET Mombasa calls off planned demonstrations

The planned peaceful demonstrations set for today by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Mombasa branch has been called off.

The branch Executive Secretary Lynette Kamadi had asked unionists from the area to avail themselves for a peaceful demonstration against the proposed housing levy in the Finance Bill 2023.

Through a notice dated May 19,2023 addressed to  Coast Regional Commander, the demonstrations were to take place on today from 9:00am to 10:00am.

“We will uphold article 37 of the constitution 2010 which states that we have the right to assemble, demonstrate and picket. The procession will commence from Pembe Za Ndovu area to Treasury Square from 9:00 am to 10:00 am and the participants must be peaceful and unarmed,” the notice read in part.

She had asked the Regional Commander to accord the union the necessary support in delivering the message to the respective leadership.

The circular was copied to the County Commissioner, County Commander, Sub-County Commander, Urban Division, the OCS, central police station, Mombasa county Director of Education, Mombasa county TSC Director, all school heads in Mombasa and teachers from the county.
