The Deputy Secretary General of the Kenya Union of Post-primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Moses Nthurima has initiated a nationwide campaign to rally teachers against participating in the marking of national examinations.

Speaking during a radio interview, Nthurima highlighted that the Government has been unresponsive for an extended period, making the boycott a necessary step to grab KNEC’s attention and prompt action.

He said that this is to press for improved pay and better working conditions for teachers involved in collaboration with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

“The subpar living conditions of markers in school dormitories and their low wages constitute a violation of human rights and should be a matter of concern for all education stakeholders,” he asserted.

Additionally, Nthurima stated that TSC has notably declined to engage in discussions with the teachers’ unions to address concerns related to compensation and working conditions for examiners.

He also called upon teachers to heed the guidance of union leaders and adhere to the provided guidelines to avoid further infringement of their rights.

However, Nthurima acknowledged that some teachers compromised the fight for improved conditions by rushing to examination centres despite existing dissatisfaction.

“The government should swiftly relocate JSS learners to secondary schools with adequate resources, preventing the collapse of teaching and learning in JSS classes due to overworked teachers handling subjects beyond their expertise,” he urged.
