The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Kajiado County Branch has raised concern over the sudden migration of several teachers from full union membership to agency status, a move that could lock them out of the upcoming union elections.

In a letter addressed to the KUPPET Secretary General, the branch revealed that affected teachers discovered the changes after reviewing their January 2026 payslips on the T-pay system.

According to the union, the teachers were moved from regular membership to agency status without their knowledge or consent.

KUPPET Kajiado Executive Secretary Zadock Kisienya said the development has caused panic and anxiety among members, noting that agency fee payers are not eligible to vote in union elections.

The situation, if not urgently addressed, could disenfranchise many teachers ahead of the KUPPET elections scheduled for February 28, 2026.

“This disturbing migration threatens the democratic rights of our members. Unless corrected immediately, affected teachers will be rendered ineligible to participate in the forthcoming elections,” Kisienya stated in the letter.

The branch has called on the union’s national office to act swiftly and restore the affected teachers’ full membership status to allow them to exercise their right to vote.

Kisienya emphasized that the issue has wider implications for union democracy and member confidence, urging the Secretary General to do everything possible to resolve the matter promptly.

KUPPET Kajiado has also attached a list of teachers affected by the changes and requested immediate administrative intervention to prevent further complications.

The union elections are a key exercise in determining leadership at both branch and national levels, making eligibility a critical issue for members.

As the election date draws closer, pressure is mounting on the national office to clarify the matter and safeguard the rights of teachers.

KUPPET has not yet issued an official response to the concerns raised by the Kajiado branch.
