The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has released an addendum outlining fresh rules on eligibility and payment requirements for members seeking to contest in the upcoming union elections.

In a circular dated January 3, 2026, and addressed to all Branch Executive Secretaries, Secretary General Akelo Misori said the National Executive Board had raised concern over teachers serving under agency terms who were actively participating in the elections, as well as secondary school members eyeing positions reserved for tertiary institutions.

To address the matter, the union directed that teachers on agency terms must pay membership fees equivalent to 13 weeks through the National Treasurer before being allowed to participate. Affected members are required to obtain an official collector’s receipt from the Treasurer as proof of payment. The fees should be deposited at Equity Bank, Fourways Branch, Nairobi, account number 0010297275826.

The addendum further clarified that tertiary seats remain strictly reserved for members from tertiary institutions. Only those currently serving as Tertiary Secretaries and defending their seats are eligible to vie for such positions. However, branches without tertiary institutions will be allowed to field secondary school teachers for these seats.

On gender representation, KUPPET reaffirmed that gender seats are preserved for women in line with the union’s inclusivity policy. The only exceptions are the positions of 2nd Assistant Gender Secretary and 3rd Assistant Gender Secretary, which are open to candidates of either gender.

The union also directed that all payments related to election eligibility must be formally communicated to the Secretary General’s office to enhance accountability and transparency.

Officials said the addendum is intended to streamline the electoral process, seal existing loopholes, and ensure fairness and order during the polls. The clarification comes as campaigns intensify across branches ahead of the elections.

KUPPET leadership has urged all members and branches to strictly adhere to the new rules to avoid disputes that could compromise the credibility of the elections. The addendum was signed and stamped by the Secretary General.
