KUPPET gives strongest hint yet of teachers strike in September

Bungoma County KUPPET Branch Chairman David Barasa. He has said a teachers' strike in September is on the cards as the government has already made a decision not to pay them their increment as per the 2021-2025 CBA.

The   Bungoma  KUPPET  Branch  Chairman  David  Barasa  has  hinted   that   teachers  will  go  on   strike  early  September  when  schools  reopen to force the government to honour their 2021-2025 Collective   Bargaining  Agreement  (CBA).

Speaking   at Bungoma Boys  High School during their Annual  General  Meeting  (AGM), Barasa  said  the  decision  by  President  William  Ruto  not  to sign Finance  Bill 2024  is  not  a valid  reason   to renege on implementing their  CBA.

According to the  KUPPET  official, the government has made a decision as the money is not reflected on the teachers’ payslips.

Barasa  reiterated  that  no   teacher  is   going  back   to  class   come  next  term  until  the government  respects  their  CBA.

He  also  slammed  the  ministry  for  reducing  the  secondary   schools  capitation  by  24 per cent, from  Ksh22,000 -17,000  per  learner, giving school managers a hard time to run programmes.

On  the same occasion,  the  Western  Regional  Director  of  Education  Jared  Obiero,  who  was  the  chief  guest, asked parents  to support  the  school  through  timely  payment  of  school  fees.

Western Regional Director of Education Jared Obiero and Bungoma County Director Pius Ng’oma at Bungoma High School’s AGM.

Obiero  noted  that  parents’  over -reliance  on  bursaries and political  leaders  to  pay  fees  is  a  major  setback  for  principals  as  it is  never  enough  to  cater  for  the  learners’  needs.

Bungoma  County  Director  of  Education  Pius  Ng’oma  and  TSC  Director  Wilson  Koros  applauded  the  teaching  staff  for  their  dedication  to work.

Bungoma  Boys  High  School  Chief  Principal Enock  Andanje urged  parents  to  pay fees, revealing that they owe the school a whopping Ksh29  million.
