KUPPET demands permanent terms for teachers on contract

KUPPET national officials at a past presser. The union wants contract teachers to be placed on permanent and pensionable terms.

KUPPET is now demanding that teachers serving on contracts should be converted into permanent and pensionable terms.

Sammy Chelang’a, who is in charge of tertiary institutions, says the teachers have proved that they can do the job, and it is unnecessary to delay their confirmation.

“Teachers serving on contract have proved that they can and it is wrong to delay their employment. As we speak, these teachers are now in a state of panic because the one year contract they signed is due for expiry soon,” he said.

20,000 teachers were recruited early this year to help tackle under-staffing problems in public schools across the country.

Addressing the press, Chelang’a stated that the one year non-renewable contract expiring in January should be looked into afresh.

He also decried the poor remuneration of the interns, whom he said earn only Ksh20,000 monthly on a huge workload.

“Teachers serving on contract earn a salary of Ksh20,000 a month and they are expected to have taught 14 subjects by the end of the year. This is unacceptable. As a union, we demand that TSC address this problem urgently,” he said.

Concerning junior secondary, he said KPSEA candidates should proceed to secondary school because primary schools do not have the requisite facilities.

However, TSC has announced that the teachers will serve for another 1 year before their terms are reviewed, arguing that Ksh4.7 billion is required to absorb them in permanent and pensionable terms.
