Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) Makueni branch chairman Erastus Kimetu-brigadier has called for immediate intervention on teachers promotion adding that stagnating teachers need to be relieved by promoting thousands of the teachers.

Speaking during term two county teachers’ games clinic held at Makueni boys, Kimetu said the TSC, Parliamentary Education Committee and the state should look at the issue with the seriousness it deserves.

“There are teachers who have stagnated over the same job group for about eight years. They keep on attending interviews but no promotions. It’s tiresome and demoralizing and some are ageing already,” Kimetu said.

The union leader noted that its funny finding recent practicing teachers holding senior grades way above their former instructor who deserve promotions but they have not, adding that the integrity in teacher promotion is questionable.

Kimetu observed that it’s good for TSC to consider date of employment and stay, to avoid junior teachers getting senior job groups.

He also noted that some schools do not have substantive administrators thus many are serving in acting capacity with no compensation instead of confirming them.

He called for the merging of grades C4, D2 and D3 or else be abolished completely to streamline career progression in teachers.

Not forgetting teachers in arid and semi arid areas, he noted that they deserve hard-to-staff allowance to enable them work smoothly.

He added that parliamentary committee on education has failed to put in place decisive policies on promotions.

“Teachers need clear timelines. We should be promoted after every three years thus the committee should allocate enough funds and fight for teachers’ welfare in the assembly,” Kimetu added.

However the leader appreciated the government for Ksh1 billion allocations for teacher promotions but added that if it can increase to Ksh3 billion, it can cater for the needs.
