KUPPET branches on the verge of collapse as cash crunch bites

KUPPET NGC when it announced its intention to go on strike in August. The announcement has plunged the union into a crisis as TSC is yet to deduct dues from salaries of members two months after stopping it, putting operations in the branches in jeopardy.

Operations at Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) branches are grinding to a halt due to a cash drought brought about by non-remittances for close to two months now.

This is after the country’s teacher employer the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) failed to deduct union dues from the teachers’ payslips for the second month and remitting to the union.

A number of KUPPET branch Executive Secretaries who spoke to Education News confirmed that they have not received the dues two months now and that their offices are facing closure due to rent arrears.

Full time staff have gone without salaries for the period.

“Yes its two months now we haven’t received the union dues to branches. As we speak with you now the branch hasn’t paid the office premises for two months,” said Vihiga Executive Secretary Sabala Inyeni, who also noted that he has not received a salary for the period.

This was confirmed by his Nandi counterpart Paul Rotich who noted that the branch has been forced to scale down its operations.

“We have not received the union dues and we are moving in to the third month now. Currently we have reduced all the branch expenditure and only looking at emergency issues like welfare of teachers. I have also received several demands of payment of rent while my full time officers in my branch haven’t received salaries for the last three months,” said Rotich.

TSC refused to deduct union dues from KUPPET members when they declared a strike in August this year, but has not resumed normal operations even after the strike was called off.

This comes amid bitter leadership wrangles that have split the National Executive Board (NEB). Currently, there is a pending disciplinary action on three top officials: National Assistant Treasurer Ronald Tonui, National Secretary Tertiary Sammy Chelang’a, and Migori Executive Secretary Samuel Orwa Jasolo.

Secretary General Akelo Misori had summoned them over allegations of forging a fake resignation letter purported to be by him, but he was stopped by the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC).
