The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has finally coiled its tail and agreed to the demands tabled by the firebrand leadership of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers over what the latter had termed grey engagement rules in their amended union’s constitution.
Speaking to the press after an intense closed-door meeting with the union’s top brass, Omari Omari, the national spokesperson of JSS teachers, cleared the air over clauses in the KUPPET’s constitution amendment draft that the teachers felt were barring them from being bonafide members of the new marriage despite their contribution in terms of union dues.
Omari reported the earlier clause barring JSS teachers from contesting until they finish five years after employment had been quashed aside.
JSS teachers will now be considered for any seat from the branch to the national level after three months of employment.
Initially, JSS was given the position of assistant secretary. Today, the title was changed to JSS secretary as the new bride was wondering whom they would be assistants to.

If there are eight KUPPET trustees (four males and four females), the JSS lot will be allocated two slots to represent each gender.
In the changes bitterly swallowed by KUPPET top guns, JSS teachers will equally be given more nominations from the branches to the national level.
In cases of mistreatment of JSS teachers by their supervisors, Omari implored the union to stem the vice.
He termed the physical harassment of teachers in Turkana and Nyamira counties unfortunate. He said the teachers are young, and due process should be followed instead of what is being witnessed.
The JSS teachers further raised their concerns about how co-curricular activities were being administered without them being involved.
They now want JSS co-curricular activities to be run by them to ensure seamless participation by the learners and their trainers.
The rules of engagement are out, and JSS teachers are officially working on a deal with KUPPET.
When reached for comments, most KUPPET members pointed out that the KUPPET officials quickly solidified the marriage despite their growing fears about the new partner’s exuberance in leadership roles.
