KUCCPS mentors students on career choices, placement procedures

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) in partnership with Taita Taveta University (TTU) held a week long career selection and mentorship forum for form four leavers, continuing students and residents of Wundanyi, Taveta, Mwatate and Voi sub-counties.

KUCCPS officers guided the participants on the processes and procedures for student placement to institutions of higher learning as well as career choices.

They also sensitized students on the available degree, diploma, craft and artisan programmes, career paths and government sponsorship to universities and colleges.

The programme also aims to inform students on the role KUCCPS plays in assisting them join.

Nancy Soila, an officer from KUCCPS, stated that through the programme, they aim to create awareness on the functions of the placement service, educate students on career choices and sensitize  and empower teachers on the current career trends to enable them provide effective career guidance to students.

She stressed on the need for teachers to guide students on the requirements, like subjects, for given courses.

“If students don’t get the correct career guidance, they might fail to get the careers of their choice,” she stated.

Professor Cheruiyot Wilson, a lecturer at TTU, said the programme has given students and other stakeholders a chance to know the university environment and the kind of courses offered at the institution.

He added that the university has partnered with principals, county education officers and other stakeholders to provide mentorship programmes to schools.

Another lecturer Dr. Mwakio Mwagandi noted that the exercise by KUCCPS has greatly benefitted many students and stakeholders in the county, further stating that on average, the institution has been receiving between 100 to 200 students daily.

He added that the visit has also helped the school market itself through direct engagement with students and other stakeholders.

“The knowledge the students have received has empowered them to make proper decisions including selecting TTU as their university of choice,” he said.

KUCCPS has been holding the student career guidance and teacher sensitisation programmes in selected institutions countrywide.
