The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has revealed that the university application portal will open next week.
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Agnes Wahome assured on Wednesday, March 19, that all students who met the university entry requirements and submitted applications would secure placement.
Wahome explained that the placement service had already obtained approved university capacities, paving the way for qualified candidates to begin their applications.
“This week, we received the approved capacities from universities. They have declared capacities of about 300,000, so you can see that it’s more than the students who qualified for admission,” Wahome stated.
She further highlighted that while 246,391 candidates qualified for university slots, KUCCPS would only place students who actively applied.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba supported Wahome’s remarks, informing the National Assembly’s Education Committee that the application portal would open before March ends.
Ogamba, addressing lawmakers on Wednesday, March 19, attributed the delay in opening the portal to a court ruling that temporarily paused the new university funding model.

“We agreed that by the end of this month, the portals would be open for university students. We are now working on what should happen next and addressing related issues,” Ogamba told MPs.
This update comes a month after KUCCPS opened applications for Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) courses for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohort.
On January 25, Wahome informed education stakeholders that KUCCPS had adopted a phased application process to ensure students enrolling for the March intake could apply on time.
She explained that after completing KMTC applications, the portal would open for Teacher Training Colleges (TTC) and, subsequently, universities.
“Universities and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) normally have their intakes later in the year while KMTC and TVETs admit theirs in January, March, and May, hence the need to have a phased application process to enable students to transition to colleges promptly,” said Wahome.
