KUCCPS: 440,000 students miss admission slots in colleges, varsities

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) Board Member Prof. Stephen Mbugua has expressed concern over the high number of 2022 KCSE candidates who missed admission to various colleges and universities.

Speaking at Christ the King Secondary School in Nakuru County, Prof Mbugua lamented that out of the 860,000 students  who sat for the exams, only 173,129 students got direct admissions to universities and 230,000 students secured slots for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions leaving 440,000 students will no institution to join.

“This state is not good for a country which values education as one of its pillars of economic development. These 440,000 students studied for four years and their efforts should not go in vain. Something very serious should be done to save our secondary school children,” said the professor.

He urged secondary school teachers to put in extra efforts to ensure students perform well in KCSE and secure chances to join higher institutions of learning.

“Thousands of students are performing poorly in their academics, a situation that will negatively affect the country’s economic, social and political development in the coming years,” he said, further urging all education stakeholders to join hands to improve the standards of education in the country.

He termed education as the only equalizer between the rich and the poor and the only means to eradicate poverty and boost social and economic development.

He noted that there is need for the country to gear towards value based education with research and innovation in order to expose students to the current technological know-how which is essential in the current job market.
