Throughout the Mt Kenya region, North Rift, Luo Nyanza and some parts of the former Western province, Jamin John Musundi was a household name within the booming coffee industry that saw majority Kenyan coffee farmers reaping maximum profitability for their investment for a record two decades.
It was the same Musundi who as a co-founder of the Co-operative Bank and the chairman of the giant Kenya Planters Cooperatives Union (KPCU) championed for coffee farmer to open accounts with Cooperative Bank that has since enhanced network with thousands of cooperative societies countrywide.
Born in Bungoma and later moved to Trans Nzoia in the early 1980s, the professional teacher and founder of the Friends Church (Quakers) embraced the coffee mission to Trans Nzoia where residents were fully engrossed in maize production.
And here was the late JJ, as he was fondly called, at Tulwet Farm in Waitaluk location, Kiminini constituency, to donate part of his land for a primary school, a Church and a police post also encompassing the Chief’s office.
And when a team of professionals from Nairobi visited the site last week to commemorate the late Musundi, the group led by lawyer Mark Ngaru perhaps had come to complete JJ’s dream enhancing education by launching the JJ Tulwet Vocational and Training Centre .
Accompanied by the Estate beneficiaries Joe Musundi (Journalist) Onesmus Musundi( Banker), David Musundi( Agro-farmer) and Steve Musundi( South Africa Investor) Mr. Ngaru revealed that the Khs 30 million JJ Tulwet TVT was a partnership with the Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya’s county government.
According to the schedule, the TVT different from the current system run by the government will be modeled on the compulsory Information Technology course. The centre which wills open its doors in 2024 will later be expanded to the other four sub-counties of Cherangany, Endebess, Saboti, Kwanza and Kitale Municipality.
The primary school occupies 5 acres, the Church and the police post 1 acre each while the TVT has been allocated 2 acres with room for further expansion.
Speaking during the launch, Joe Musundi, a former photo-journalist wit KTN, said apart from the artistic programmes the institute will offer, emphasis has been laid on agricultural technology as the mainstay activity of Trans Nzoia County. The other courses offered will be masonry, hairdressing, carpentry, plumbing and metalwork, all underpinned under IT programme.
“This initiative is response to the Kenya’s significant poverty and unemployment challenges that seem to impede the social and economic development’’, Joe Musundi said adding that the move was mitigation for child abuse, petty crime and alcoholism within the society affecting mostly the youths.
David Musundi, the JJ family spokesman, being pushed to vie for Kiminini constituency against the incumbent Kakai Bisau in 2027 said: ‘’This is the only be fitting tribute to the pioneering Kenyan who made a mark in the field of agriculture, education and community development’’
But sources divulged that Bisau will not be defending the Kiminini seat and will go for the governor’s race which he has unsuccessfully contested twice. The other possible contestants for Kiminini will be Dr Joseph Wafula alias Dabo Dabo who was recently appointed as a director to the Kenyatta National Hospital and former Kiminini MCA David Kisaka.
