Education stakeholders and students have a reason to smile after Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo, announced last week that the government is planning to open Konza Technology University.

The Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) is groomed to offer Masters and Doctorate- level training in Mechanical, Electrical and ICT Engineering.

It will also produce graduates of science, technology and innovation as part of the government`s interventions to drive digital transformation.

The postgraduate studies institution was funded partly by a Sh. 9.6 billion credit facility from South Korea with the government of Kenya chipping in by contributing Sh 4.5 billion.

The campus will be compromised of 10 research science labs working as operation spaces for specialised local and international researchers in science, technology and engineering, according to the construction plan.

Dr. Lilian Wanzare, an ICT Lecturer at Maseno University applauded the move saying that the research projects developed by postgraduate learners at the tech university will have the potential to evolve into impact establishments hence resulting to creation of jobs.

The institution sits on a 36 acres piece of land at the Technopolis.
