The Kenya National Union of Teachers, (KNUT) has assured its members that it is steadily engaging the national government to resolve key issues affecting teachers across the country.
Speaking to the press, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu said the union remains committed to safeguarding the rights and welfare of teachers, noting that the prevailing political climate is conducive to constructive dialogue.
“The union remains focused on championing the rights and welfare of teachers,” Oyuu said. “The current political environment is favourable for sustained engagement between KNUT and the government.”
He revealed that the union has already presented several concerns to President William Ruto and expressed confidence that these matters will be progressively addressed.
Among the top priorities, Oyuu highlighted the timely release and possible increase of capitation funds, which he said are essential to the smooth functioning of schools.
Accompanied by other national officials, the secretary general emphasized that trained teachers who have remained out of service for years will be given priority in upcoming recruitment exercises.

Oyuu also urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to establish wellness centres to support the mental and physical well-being of teachers, noting that many educators continue to work under stressful conditions.
On the persistent teacher shortage, he said the government is expected to recruit more staff to ease the workload on existing teachers.
KNUT national second vice chairman Aggrey Namisi also addressed the press, recalling the union’s financial struggles in 2021—a period he said discouraged many from seeking leadership roles.
Namisi criticized individuals who abandoned the union during its most difficult moments.
“Some of us went for thirty months without pay,” he said, emphasizing the resilience and loyalty of members who remained committed throughout the hardship.
