Knut wants TSC to pay retired teachers on time

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) official has appealed to the National Government to pay retired teachers their pension on time to ease their suffering.

Kisii Central branch Kenya Union Executive Secretary, Albert Ondimu appealed to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to present names of retiring teachers to Treasury early to prepare the fund.

“It takes up to two years before the teachers get their money. We want the trend to change,” Ondimu said.

He spoke at Nyambera DOK Primary School Thursday, March 21, during the retirement of teacher Pius Okemwa.

The Trade unionist said it was necessary for the Government to pay the retired teachers to that they enjoy their retirement.

“Retired teachers have served the country well and we do not want them to wait anxiously for their pension,” Ondimu added.

The official said several aging teachers have stagnated in one Job Group for long and asked the Commission to promote them so as to boost their morale.

The trade unionist implored the Government to promote teachers nearing retirement to boost their pension to enable them live decent lives.

Okemwa also appealed to the Government to reintroduce mother tongue in schools to enable children embrace it thus fostering  communities’ cultures.

He noted it was good for children to know their native languages as part of their cultural identity apart from other languages.

“It is good for children to know how to speak and write in their first languages. I urge parents to be first teachers of their children,” Okemwa added.

The retiree, who taught for 35 years in 36 schools, commended the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) emphasizing, it enables children discover their talents at a tender age, exploit and benefit.

An author of two books, he wants to spend his retirement writing books and offering consultancy services in educational matters.

”I want to embark on writing two more books in Philosophy and Swahili,” Okemwa told Education News at the school.
