The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) continues to press the government to resolve the challenges surrounding the Social Health Authority (SHA).
Eldama Ravine Branch Secretary Francis Bundotich says that despite raising concerns, the government has yet to address the problems.
Speaking in the area, Bundotich questioned why SHA does not cover outpatient services, even though they had been told it was better than the previous one.
“We are still questioning why SHA is not fully operational. We had raised this matter before, but no action has been taken so far,” said Bundotich.
He pointed out that it was wrong to deny a patient services for whatever reason, even though they had contributed to the cover.

Bundotich also wants to require patients to start from lower-level hospitals and be allowed to visit any facility based on their illnesses.
“The requirement that patients start from lower-level hospitals before being referred to other facilities is punitive and unacceptable.
Patients should be allowed to visit hospitals they prefer and where they believe they can be attended well,” noted Bundotich.
His Kericho counterpart, David Bore, had earlier threatened to call teachers to industrial action over unresolved issues in SHA.
Despite Kenyans’ numerous concerns about SHA, the government insists that the cover is well operational.
