KNUT to fill vacant national slots in this month’s SDC

By Roy Hezron

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is set to hold its Special Delegates Conference (SDC) on Saturday February 19, 2022 at Nyayo National Stadium.

During the conference, there will be a by election to fill the positions of the Deputy National Treasurer and Assistant National Treasurer.

The position of the Deputy National Treasurer fell vacant after the death of Mwalimu Abdi Hussein in November last year, a situation that forced the Assistant National Treasurer Mr Kennedy Nyamwanda to  act as the deputy national treasurer while Sheikh Kullow Mohammed, the National Executive Committee member for North Eastern region, had to act as the assistant national treasurer.

The conference, which is expected to start at 9 a.m, is also expected to consider the union’s proposal that 63 out of the 110 branches should be scrapped off.

In the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the union agreed to review the Recognition Agreement (RA) of May 15, 1968 with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) so that the changes are interterm with the current changes in the education sector.

Under the new Recognition Agreement,  TSC agreed to grant leave of absence upon request by the union to the Secretary General, ten other members elected to the National Office and a total of Forty Seven (47) Branch Executive Secretaries effective July 1, 2026.

The current 110 branch executive secretaries will discharge their duties until 2026 when the clause will take effect.
