The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has announced the official schedule for its 2026 Branch general elections, directing all 110 branches to begin immediate preparations.

The communication, issued by Secretary General Collins Oyuu and shared with the National Chairman, the National Treasurer, all Branch Chairmen, Branch Treasurers and National Executive Council (NEC) Members, sets the stage for a major leadership transition across the union’s network.

The elections will be conducted over a three-month period, beginning on January 5, 2026, and ending on March 31, 2026. This schedule aligns with the national framework outlined by the Office of the Registrar of Trade Unions for the 2026 trade union election cycle.

According to the directive, all KNUT branches are required to commence preparations in strict compliance with the Ministry of Labour’s notice on trade union elections. The move is aimed at ensuring order, transparency and adherence to established procedures as the union prepares for the next phase of its leadership renewal.

Secretary General Oyuu emphasized that the central leadership expects each branch to organize and execute the process efficiently, from nominations to the final vote count, in line with the Ministry’s guidelines.

KNUT, which represents thousands of teachers across the country, conducts branch elections every five years to elect officials who serve as the link between members and the national leadership.

The 2026 elections will therefore play a crucial role in shaping the union’s direction and strengthening its grassroots representation.
