KNUT releases nationwide timetable for 2026 branch elections

Teachers across the country are set to participate in phased KNUT branch elections scheduled to run from January to March 2026.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers has announced a national timetable for its 2026 Branch General Elections.

The timetable outlines when and where teachers nationwide will vote in the union’s grassroots polls.

The branch elections will be conducted in phases over nearly two months, beginning on Saturday, January 10, 2026, and concluding on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

The first phase of elections will take place on January 10, 2026, covering branches in the Central, Nyanza, Eastern, Rift Valley and Coast regions.

This will be followed by additional rounds on January 11 and January 17, extending the process to more branches nationwide.

The elections will roll through Western, Rift Valley, Nyanza, Coast, Central, Eastern and North Eastern regions, with polling dates slated for January 24 and January 31, followed by February 7, February 14 and February 21.

The final phase of the elections will take place on February 28 and March 7, 2026, marking the conclusion of the nationwide branch election exercise.

Branches voting on the final day include those in Central, Eastern, Rift Valley and Western regions, effectively closing the union’s grassroots democratic process.

The election schedule operationalises the instructions issued in the December 17, 2025, circular by the Secretary General, which stated, “Here attached find the schedule of Branch Elections in line with the Registrar of Trade Unions circular.”

The timetable provides teachers with clarity on when their respective branches will go to the polls and aligns with the union’s constitutional and legal obligations.

By spreading the elections over several weeks, KNUT aims to minimise disruptions, allow sufficient preparation time for branches and ensure compliance with labour regulations.
