Chepkoilel Branch KNUT Executive Secretary Sammy Bor has condemned the unrest being witnessed in schools where students have burnt dormitories.

Speaking to the press, Bor said the act was barbaric and uncalled for, he then called upon all those involved to be arrested and prosecuted.

“As teachers Union, we want to condemn the recent barbaric acts by our students; it is very awkward since there are better ways of solving conflicts and issues. I want to urge our students to refrain from such activities and if they have any genuine complaint that requires the attention of the school there are channels of communication that can be used for their issues to be heard and determined,” said the KNUT official.

He said the cases of students torching schools have increased owing to the post coronavirus crush program where teachers want to finish their syllabus that they did not cover during the pandemic.

“Schools should enhance guiding and counseling department so that students can listen to when they are facing any problem, the government should also equip day schools so that in the event of an unrest the students could be allowed to join day schools where their parents can guide them as it is their responsibility,” Bor added.

He said the government should enhance vigilance and surveillance, adding that “Schools should enhance surveillance since what is used to burn dormitories is gotten from outside, the school should put CCTV cameras so that any foreign item is checked by the school as a number of schools have porous fences,” she said.

Bor said that co-curricular activities should also be introduced in schools which will help to ease the pressure.
