Knut official calls for dialogue with TSC over CBA

By Enock Okong’o

A Kenya National Union Of Teachers (Knut) official has said they are ready to have dialogue with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) over teacher’s salary increment.

The Knut Deputy General Secretary Collins Otieno said the implementation of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is overdue and asked TSC to discuss with the union instead of intimidating teachers.

Speaking in Kilgoris during the Transmara KNUT branch elections, Otieno said a national teachers’ strike is looming unless the TSC agrees to have round table talks with the union.

He cautioned TSC against treating teachers like slaves and  at the same time expect good standards of education  especially during the current transitional period of the  curriculum.

Otieno criticized Education CS Prof George Magoha for allegedly blaming teachers and prefects for arson in schools.

“Security is a collective responsibility and the CS should reverse his stand on the matter because failure to do that will cause disharmony  among various education stakeholders,” said Otieno.

During the meeting that was attended by over 700 teachers, all officials were re-elected unopposed, except the posts of the Deputy Executive Secretary and Deputy Treasurer.

Narok County Labour Officer Paul Nyukul, praised the teachers for conducting peaceful elections.
