The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Narok branch has faulted the recent recruitment of teachers, terming the exercise flawed and unfair to local educators.
Led by branch Chairman Newton Koech, the union claimed that teachers from the area, particularly those from Amalo and Ololulunga, were locked out of the recruitment process.
“We have many qualified graduate teachers from Amalo and Ololulunga who have remained unemployed for years, yet they were not considered in this recruitment,” Koech said.
Speaking to the press, he lamented that replacement slots which were expected to benefit local teachers, were allegedly awarded to individuals from outside the region.
“It is unacceptable that even replacement positions that should have been given to locals were taken by people from outside. This denies our teachers a fair opportunity,” he added.

Koech called for urgent intervention, insisting that graduate teachers from the affected areas deserve priority consideration in future recruitment exercises.
On hardship allowances, the union demanded that Amalo and Ololulunga be officially classified as hardship areas, citing the difficult working conditions faced by teachers.
“Teachers serving in these areas face numerous challenges in their day-to-day lives. The government must recognise Amalo and Ololulunga as hardship zones so that teachers can receive the allowances they deserve,” Koech said.
At the same time, the branch reiterated its support for the Competency Based Education (CBE) curriculum but urged the government to allocate more resources to ensure its successful implementation.
“We support Competency Based Education, but the government must set aside more funds to hire additional teachers, construct new classrooms and purchase enough learning materials. Without adequate investment, smooth learning will remain a challenge,” Koech stated.
