The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Nandi branch, has voiced concern over prolonged delays in the payment of retirement benefits to former teachers, saying the situation has left many pensioners struggling to survive.

KNUT Tinderet Chairperson Wilson Kemboi said numerous retirees have waited for years without receiving their dues despite dedicating their lives to public service. “Many of our retirees are extremely frustrated because they have waited for their benefits for many years without success. This is unfair to teachers who gave their best years to public service,” he said.

Kemboi noted that the delays have worsened the living conditions of many pensioners, particularly those who are elderly and sickly. “Some of these retirees are unwell and cannot afford proper medical care. Others are unable to educate their children or meet basic family needs because their pensions have not been paid,” he added.

Beyond pensions, Kemboi also called for urgent action to resolve challenges surrounding the placement of Grade 9 learners under the Competency‑Based Curriculum (CBC). He said confusion over school allocations has left parents and learners frustrated, urging clear communication and proper planning.

On school financing, the union leader pressed the government to release capitation funds promptly to avoid disruptions in learning. “Capitation funds should be released promptly so that schools can run smoothly without unnecessary interruptions,” he said.

Kemboi further encouraged parents to enroll learners who did not qualify for university admission into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, stressing the importance of technical skills for national development. “TVET institutions offer valuable opportunities for young people to acquire practical skills and earn a living,” he said.

As teachers prepare to elect new union officials, Kemboi urged them to choose visionary leaders who will champion their welfare and strengthen the union. “We are calling on teachers to elect leaders with vision. Such officials are important not only for the welfare of teachers but also for the growth and stability of the union,” he said.

KNUT confirmed it will continue engaging relevant authorities to ensure retirees receive their benefits and that education‑related challenges in the county are addressed.
