The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nandi Branch has strongly criticized the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) over what it termed as the continued implementation of the delocalization policy, despite claims that the policy had been banned.

Tinderet/Nandi East Branch Executive Secretary Boniface Tenai questioned why the commission was still affecting transfers under the policy, terming the move unfair and unacceptable to teachers.

“We do not understand why TSC continues to implement delocalization yet it was banned. Teachers are being transferred without consultation, and this has caused anxiety and disruption to their lives,” Tenai said.

Speaking to the press, he insisted that teachers must be consulted before any transfers are effected, noting that unilateral decisions by the commission undermine morale in the teaching fraternity.

“Teachers should be involved in decisions that affect them directly. These transfers are unacceptable and must be stopped,” he added.

On the issue of hardship allowance, Tenai emphasized its importance, warning that the union would strongly oppose any attempt to abolish it.

“Hardship allowance is not a privilege; it is a necessity. Any move to scrap it will be met with stiff resistance from the union,” he stated.

Tenai further proposed that Chemelil, Songor and Kapsimotwo be officially listed as hardship areas, arguing that teachers serving in the regions face numerous challenges despite faithfully paying taxes.

“Teachers in these areas grapple with poor infrastructure and difficult living conditions. It is only fair that these regions be gazetted as hardship areas,” he said.

The union official also thanked teachers in the region for re-electing him as branch secretary for 11 consecutive years, attributing the gesture to his commitment to serving their interests.

“I am grateful to the teachers for the confidence they have shown in me over the years. This motivates me to continue fighting for their rights,” Tenai noted.

He maintained that KNUT would remain united and firm in defending teachers, warning that any attempts to frustrate them would be met with strong opposition.

“As a union, we will remain united. Any effort to undermine or frustrate teachers will not go unchallenged,” Tenai said.
