KNUT Nairobi holds branch elections as Macharia clinches Executive Secretary in landslide victory

Teachers in turned out in large numbers today to elect new leaders for the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nairobi branch. In the hotly contested Executive Secretary race, Mugwa Macharia secured a commanding victory with 1,565 votes against Martha Omolo’s 569. Alvans Odhiambo was elected Assistant Executive Secretary unopposed.

Kasina Nyamai won the Chairman’s seat with 1,647 votes, defeating Nancy Wairimu, who garnered 482. The Vice Chairman position went to Stephen Maina with 1,399 votes, ahead of Ronald Ndege, who received 724.

For Treasurer, Hanningtone Ochieng emerged victorious with 1,753 votes against Haron Macharia’s 385. The Assistant Treasurer post was claimed by Regina Cherono with 1,381 votes, followed by Hamida Mohammed with 499 and Irene Monchari with 246.

In the Women Representative contest, Jane Ochwedo triumphed with 1,433 votes, beating Anne Wanyoike, who had 454 and Regina Wangui, with 254.

The elections also saw the selection of Branch Executive Committee (BEC) members across Nairobi sub‑counties. Sammy Kipkosgei was elected for Langata, Joseph Karuri (Dagoretti), Anthony Ochieng (Westlands), Stephen Nduta (Njiru), Eliakim Onsabwa  (Ruaraka), Samuel Gachuki (Embakasi West), Boniface Maina (Starehe), Kenneth Ngure (Embakasi East0, and Enock Musungu (Mathare)

The election was marked by mixed reactions, with some candidates alleging voter bribery and rigging, while others insisted the exercise was free and fair
