Knut Mwingi branch executive secretary Michael Munyasya Mbutu who is eyeing NEC influential seat has promised to inject new leadership in the giant union if elected.
He said that bringing the much required reforms r by the union is among his top priorities.
“Everyone knows that the union has operated for the last 60 years ago. The tradition which has been followed ignores some of the vital organs in the union like regional councils which exercise very big mandate and it’s not stipulated in the constitution,” noted Mbutu.
Mbutu observed that if elected he would wish to see everybody in the union have functions stipulated in the constitution so that leaders may not misuse some of the bodies.
He called for teachers’ support in his bid, adding that he will push for 75 per cent of the money collected in the branch to be remitted back to the branch while 25 percent is retained at the headquarters.
He promised to bring financial prudence where members will enjoy transparency and accountability right from the branch level up to national level.
“I will personally consult the professionals and push that to become part of the constitution during the ADC,” he added.
He stated that the union should have an electoral body so that a decision should not be made by an individual, but there should be a number of people accorded those functions to oversee elections because the entire NEC cannot carry out that mandate of a big number of people.
“We ought to have a small number which can determine the eligibility of a candidate, the election date of branches together with the national election and determine the eligibility of the delegates which is very possible,” he said.
Currently we lack foresight for those who have been there. This ought to have been done some 20 years back.
“I’m a reformist, independent, capable and I shall deliver and negotiate if accorded the opportunity. Teachers want new leaders and I will represent divergent and dynamism into new dispensation,” said the unionist.
