Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has joined the nation in mourning the death of celebrated author and scholar, Professor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, whose passing marks the end of an era for African literature and intellectual thought.

In a heartfelt tribute, KNUT’s 2nd National Vice Chairman, Aggrey Murumba Namisi, described Professor Ngũgĩ as “a scholar with great distinction” whose work has left an indelible mark on generations of readers and thinkers.

“Kenya has lost one of her scholars with great distinction,” said Namisi. “Professor Thiong’o dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and made significant contributions to the literary world with his famous publication, The River Between.”

Professor Ngũgĩ, widely regarded as one of Africa’s foremost writers, was a staunch advocate for decolonization, African languages, and cultural identity. His literary works, essays, and plays not only challenged societal norms but also inspired movements for justice and self-determination across the continent.

While mourning his death, KNUT emphasized the importance of celebrating his legacy and the profound impact of his work, both in Kenya and globally.

Quoting former South African President Nelson Mandela, Namisi reflected:
“Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace… What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
